Are We Really Listening to the Scholars?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

What follows is a compilation of articles and audio references from Scholars related to many of the contemporary problems between Ahlus-Sunnah and with regards to those who ascribe to as-Salafiyyah.

And hopefully what can be attained by it is for an individual to understand that Salafiyyah is Islaam and Islaam is Salafiyyah and that it is not a hizb (a group, party, clique, or gang). And when it comes to declaring others to be outside the fold of Ahlus-Sunnah then this is a dangerous affair as the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said,

“Whoever accuses a believer of something that is untrue then Allah will make him dwell in the pus flowing from the inhabitants of the Fire and he will not leave until he retracts from what he said.” Reported by Ahmad (no. 5385) and others….”

And likewise there are principles and dawabit as it relates to Takfeeer, Tafseeq, and Tabdee and these matters should be left to the scholars and not to students of knowledge. So we shouldn’t rush to place a hukm on another Muslim.

However, what we find in these times is students of knowledge who attack other students by seeking Fatawaa from scholars against their brothers.  This is done by gathering statements often times by conflating issues, misinterpreting speech, and speaking on behalf of others intentions without opening up their chests to see. Then even when their opponents make genuine mistakes these mistakes are often exaggerated and we find scholars who are respected as Imaams of Ahlus-Sunnah who have made similar mistakes but whose honour is still held in tack. Refer to the video entitled, “The Muslims are Tired” by Ash-Shaykh Saalih bin Sa’d as-Suhaymee (hafidhahullaah).

And there are specific examples of this that can be given but the point is to show that often verdicts are made by scholars against students of knowledge and du’aat because of information they are receiving from those who are rivals to them. And as is mentioned in al-Mizan, “The speech of contemporaries and peers requires deep reflection and careful deliberation.” And a question we have to ask when a Salafi student of knowledge is warned against in the West by a scholar in the East, is did that scholar speak with that student personally about the issue before warning against him?  This is because if the verdict is given on an individual based upon what others have related to a scholar, it is possible it could be distorted information.

And Imaam adh-Dhahabee said: ”The criticism that contemporaries criticise each other with is not taken into consideration , especially if it becomes apparent that there is hatred/enmity between them or due to them trying to enforce their school of thought (madhab) against each other or due to حسد envy. And nobody is safe from these kind of things except the one that Allah has protected. I don’t know of an era that anyone has been safe (from these matters ) except the prophets the sidiqeeen, and if you wanted me to mention (examples ) I would have made books/ scrolls out of this, listing the examples of those who have done this. الاعتدال”

Then we also have to ask what is the meaning of the criticism from the scholar, does it mean that the Shaykh clarified that some of the statements of said student are wrong and it is clarified publicly or does it mean that the Shaykh is saying he is a full blown innovator who should be totally abandoned? As it is possible to misunderstand a criticism of a scholar like we see in this example here: http://www.salafi-dawah.com/you-are-making-tabdirsquo-on-this-one-and-that-one-are-you-making-tabdirsquo-on-the-best-of-salafyeen.html And Shaykh Muhammad ibn Umar Bazmool (hafidhahullaah) also gave some words connected to this: https://soundcloud.com/ulamaaudio/how-to-understand-statements-of-criticism-avoid-extremism-in-their-application

Then even if a student or da’ee has fallen into errors but he is a person who desires the truth – then this has to be rectified as maturely, calmly, and wisely as possible.

However, we find students blindly following verdicts of scholars in declaring others to be misguided and innovators and people blindly following those students. Then these students and commoners who blind follow them then try to force their views upon other people. But Taqleed is not knowledge and if one is a Muqallid they cannot force their views upon another. As Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah said;

“Whoever embarks on acting upon the speech of some of the scholars in regards to the matters of ijtihaad, he should not be boycotted nor blamed. Whoever acts upon one of the two opinions should also not be blamed. If it becomes apparent to a person that one of the two opinions outweighs the other, he should act upon that which has become apparent to him, otherwise he blind follows those scholars whose speeches is depended upon when it comes to putting forth that which is closest to the correct opinion.”

And he said:

“Whoever takes a position as a muqalid then it is not for him (muqalid) to refute someone for taking a position as a muqalid to another scholar. However, if there happens to be from either of them Islamically legislated evidence then it is waajib to follow the daleel if it is made clear. It is not permissible for anyone to say this is the correct statement over another statement without daleel. And he doesn‟t have partisanship to one statement over another statement or over (partisanship) over one person saying it as opposed to the other without daleel. Whoever is a muqalid he takes the rulings of taqleed. Thus, this person (doesn’t say this is the correct or that it the correct),… And whoever has knowledge and clarification as for what he says, then he is heard, whatever he says that is from the truth, then it is accepted and what he says that is not from the truth then it is baatil (rejected). And whatever is not clear, and whatever has not been ruled as being correct or baatil, then we stop there. Allah, The Most High, differentiated between the people in terms of their ability and mental strength to understand and comprehend just like he differentiated between the strength of the physical bodies.” Majmuah 35/233

But some will try to justify their behavior (by boycotting and placing a hukm on a person) by claiming that it is supported by the noble science of Jarh wa Ta’deel which within it is a preservation for the Sunnah. However, most who act with such brutish manners will often not have any knowledge of even basic Hadith terminology let alone the principles surrounding Jarh wa Ta’deel.  Many will say that the “Jarh Mufassar (the detailed criticism) is given precedence over the general praise of a scholar.” which is a correct principle but many of the criticisms they claim are detailed are not and often the criticism is misapplied due to misunderstanding it. Then they will ignore the detailed praise from other scholars which is a mistake.

This then leads to boycotting and this is because the underlying principle for them is “whoever does not declare the innovator to be an innovator is himself an innovator.” This is from the hallmarks of al-Hadaddiyyah and so is aligning others together without dawabit and guidelines. Such that if they see a person sitting with so and so and mixing with so and so then that automatically means they are like him and astray. And they apply the Athaar of the Salaf as it relates to abandoning the real people of innovation and deviance (like the Mutazilah, the Jahmiyyah, the Qadariyyah, the Khawaarij, and the Rawafidh) to People of the Sunnah who may have made some mistakes or who they have a grudge against. This is similar to how the Khawaarij apply the Ayaat revealed concerning the Kuffaar to the Muslims.

Then even if a person genuinely feels that another person is listening and taking knowledge from someone who is astray then there is a way of advising that person. Likewise there is a way of advising and reminding a scholar or student of knowledge who has fallen into some mistakes. Taking someone by the hand with compassion and care is not the same as humiliating a person and sensationalizing their mistakes over the internet. Then you find egos become bruised in arguments and debates concerning these issues which leads to more roughness and hard heartedness. Brothers won’t give salaams to each other and others boycott each other. Why? Because you don’t agree that so and so is a deviant that should be warned against.  Inna lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’oon.

This then leads to isolation and people will even find fault with people who try to teach or give dawah at “non-Salafi Masjids”. So when the brother goes and teaches Kitaab at-Tawheed at a place that invites the Tablighi Jamaat and the Warith ud Deen Muhammad Ministry he is with them and supporting them? Or is he trying to give the people a chance to learn because he loves for his brother what he loves for himself? Then this is an area of Ijtihaad and the scholars have given various verdicts on this but brothers whose intention is to call to Allaah and to the Sunnah are criticized for going to such places to give benefit. This isolationism has weakened the Salafi Dawah and we don’t see the growth that we could see if brothers were confident in their knowledge and were capable of giving Dawah to the people.

And many of these problems in the West have been emanating from Salafi Publications and their supporters from amongst the students of knowledge and those laymen who blindly follow them. However, scholars such as Shaykh Khaalid Uthmaan, Shaykh Khaalid ar-Raddadee, Shaykh Wasiullah Abbas, and Shaykh Saalih as-Suhaymee have spoken clearly about Salafi Publications. As for me then I hold them to be my brothers who have made some mistakes by going overboard in their criticisms of certain du’aat and by aligning others with them and boycotting them which I do not believe has been sanctioned by any of the Ulamah and many of the criticisms that they spread against known students of knowledge I am not convinced of.  As for the good that they do and the beneficial knowledge that they spread then I ask Allaah to reward them for that.

However, a person will not know what I know until you have read what I have read and seen some of what I have seen. So with that in mind I am giving you the reason why I see things from my point of view by sharing various articles/audios from scholars and many of them from Shaykh Rabee because those who have fallen into much of the negative behavior mentioned above often claim love for him but may not listen to his words or read his books. And it is hoped that you read, listen, and ponder over each one in the order that follows until the matter becomes clear:

In terms of English material then no doubt the brothers at Spubs and Troid and those affiliated with them have put forward many wonderful efforts in teaching and in refuting the actual people of innovation. I respect them as students of knowledge but some of the positions that they take against certain du’aat and scholars I disagree with and I will not blindly follow others in these unfortunate disputes between Ahlus-Sunnah).
